Ping Rapture Hybrid with High-performance Review
The Ping Rapture Hybrid is the final piece in Ping's most advanced series of clubs. While not the classic looking hybrid, the Rapture uses a three different metals to reach the perfect balance between distance and forgiveness. I was at a Ping Demo Day and was able to test the Rapture Hybrid. Rapture Iron relies on strategic use of titanium, steel and tungsten to create a high-performance, multi-material iron. Careful analysis and application of each material yields forgiveness and trajectory improvements while creating a face and cavity design that produces a solid, pleasing feel and sound.
I took the Rapture Hybrid out to the range to see how it performed. The inverted crown design looks a lot better on a hybrid than it does on a driver. The super steel face made a very nice sound at impact, especially when hit dead center on the face. The ball came off extremely fast, the thinner steel helped to transfer as much energy from the club head to the ball for added distance. The rockered sole helped to get the sweet spot of the face in line with the ball even when I had an uneven lie, this made for more solid contact in all lies. The tungsten sole plate helped to launch the ball high, for softer landing shots this allows you to use the hybrid as a scoring club more than a long iron. Shots hit with these hybrids will land softly so that you don't have to calculate how far the ball will roll out.
As far as controlling the shape of the shot, the Rapture was far better than I had anticipated it being. Since most of the discretionary weight is placed low in the club rather than on the perimeter, you are able to hit both a draw and a fade relatively easily. Trajectory control is a bit more difficult, with so much weight in the sole, the ball almost automatically launches high, you almost need to hit the ball thin to get it to stay low.
